The 5th International Media for All Conference – Audiovisual Translation : Expanding Borders aims to bring together professionals, scholars, practitioners and other interested parties to explore audiovisual translation (AVT) in theory and practice, to ascertain the language needs of distributors and broadcasters, to discuss the linguistic and cultural dimensions of AVT, to look into potential synergies between the industry and the academic worlds, and to investigate the relevance and application of translation theory for this very specific and rapidly expanding translational genre.
Call for papers
Audiovisual translation, AVT, is a form of communication that is expanding at a fast rate. Its active engagement with social, cultural, political, and technological changes calls for increased specialisation and greater diversification on the part of practitioners, trainers, and researchers alike. AVT crosses many disciplinary borders, offering tremendous opportunities and challenges to its users. Markets worldwide are changing fast with distribution policies and strategies being shaped by political decisions, economic factors and audience expectations. AVT, from both the traditional translational perspective as well as the more encompassing accessibility angle, is considered to be a tool for social integration. The traditional notion of what constitutes a ‘text’ has been eroded, leading to a converging of research interests and a need for more interdisciplinary approaches. The conference organisers are especially interested in the links between AVT and other areas within translation studies, linguistics, film and TV studies.
This conference aims to map the current status of AVT profession, research, production, distribution, and consumer needs. One of the conference aims is to attract scholars and professionals from countries which have so far kept a low profile in the AVT arena, alongside those from countries in which AVT has been practised and researched. The complexity and the ways in which research input, technology, user needs and the business aspects of AVT intertwine, merits serious thought and debate. By exploring new ways of expanding these borders, Media for All 5 : Expanding Borders will address the many questions raised by the rapid expansion of audiovisual communication, rising to the challenges posed by translation in the global market.
Through papers, panels, posters, and round-table discussions, we hope to investigate these issues and to be able to promote new perspectives. We are inviting presentations reflecting the developments of our rapidly changing times within the scope of the themes listed below, and with a focus on audiovisual translation and media accessibility :
Language transfer on screen : dubbing, interpreting, narration, opera and theatre surtitling, subtitling, voice-over, localisation, fandubbing, fansubbing
Media access / cultural access : subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, live subtitling, respeaking, audio description, audio subtitling, sign language interpreting
Innovation and new technologies : formats, platforms, 3D
AVT and social media
AVT in the global market : production and distribution, new trends, tools, needs, project management

Proposals
Papers are allotted 20-minute slots to be followed by a 10-minute discussion (30 minutes in total). Proposals for papers should be presented on the abstract proposal form, which can be downloaded from here :http://mediaforall5.dhap.hr/Forms.
Abstracts of 250-350 words should be sent to Kristijan Nikolić (proposals@mediaforall5.dhap.hr) by 15th of January 2013. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 20th of February 2013.

The 4th International Media for All Conference – Audiovisual Translation : Taking Stock aims to bring together professionals, scholars, practitioners and other interested parties to explore audiovisual translation (AVT) in theory and practice, to ascertain the language needs of distributors and broadcasters, to discuss the linguistic and cultural dimensions of AVT, to look into potential synergies between the industry and the academic worlds, and to investigate the relevance and application of translation theory for this very specific and rapidly expanding translational genre. Special attention will be given to the notion of accessibility to information and to the social and economic implications of implementing appropriate quality standards.
In the global village of today, AVT is a form of communication expanding at a mind-boggling rate. Its active engagement with social, cultural, political, and technological changes calls for increased specialisation and greater diversification on the part of practitioners, trainers, and researchers alike. AVT crosses many disciplinary borders and offers a world of possibilities and challenges to its users. Markets worldwide are changing fast with distribution policies and strategies being shaped by political decisions, economic factors and audience expectations. AVT, from both the traditional translational perspective as well as the more encompassing accessibility angle, is considered to be a tool for social integration. The conference organisers are especially interested in the progress being made in turning today’s information society into an information society ‘for all’ and in the links between AVT and other disciplines within translation studies, or even text production. The traditional notion of what constitutes a ‘text’ has been eroded and this has led to a converging of research areas and a need for more interdisciplinary approaches.

KRAKOW, POLAND
The International Conference on Audiovisual Translation in Krakow is a response to a growing body of research in this area with ever-increasing demands placed on interpreters and translators. Special attention will be given to the developments in audiovisual translation theory and their practical application. We hope to bring together theorists and practitioners working on the problems of captioning, subtitling, voice-over, dubbing, surtitling, audio description, SDH, but also flash, game (computer and video games), website and software localisation to help foster dialogue and exchange of ideas between them, always bearing in mind that theory informs practice and practice informs theory. We hope to be able to discuss new perspectives, reflecting the developments of the rapidly changing discipline. The working languages of the conference will be English and Polish.

Descriptive Summary : La traducción audiovisual existe como actividad casi desde que el cine iniciara su andadura, si bien no podemos decir lo mismo de su estudio académico, cuyo origen es bastante más reciente. Ello no ha impedido que el ámbito de la traducción de textos audiovisuales haya experimentado un tremendo auge en los últimos años (cine, televisión, videojuegos…), razón por la que merece la pena parar y echar la vista atrás para ver dónde estamos y evaluar hacia dónde vamos. Así, el pasado, el presente y el futuro de esta actividad se dan la mano en un libro en el que, al igual que le ocurriera al viejo Scrooge del cuento navideño de Dickens o al ruin mandamás interpretado por Bill Murray en la película Los fantasmas atacan al jefe, se nos brinda la oportunidad de visitar y reflexionar sobre cada periodo, siendo el foco de atención en esta ocasión el modo en el que ha evolucionado la situación de la traducción audiovisual en España en los últimos 20 años. Para guiarnos en dicho viaje por el tiempo se ha reunido a un selecto grupo de destacados académicos y profesionales de la traducción audiovisual de nuestro país. Se trata, además, de un volumen abierto a todo tipo de lectores : desde el público general aficionado al mundo de la traducción y de la comunicación y también del entretenimiento audiovisual, hasta el más o menos especializado (como docentes e investigadores, estudiantes o profesionales y empresarios del ramo). Es una obra, pues, reflexiva y hasta personal, novedosa, en la que las opiniones, pensamientos y vivencias de sus autores llenan libremente sus páginas, y en la que además el mundo académico y el profesional se dan la mano para hablar de doblaje, voces superpuestas, subtitulación, accesibilidad y localización de videojuegos.
